Every Thread in the Web of Life | Kids’ Science Song

◷ 2:29

Lena uses species cards and colorful strings to reveal the many connections in an ordinary garden. Pollination, food and decomposition become parts of a web rather than one straight chain. Children discover why losing a whole species may loosen one or several connections.

Pollination

In flowering plants, pollination transfers pollen from an anther to a stigma. It can enable fertilization and seed formation, but is not fertilization itself.

Song lyrics
Language version lyrics
What shines in Lena’s garden this spring? Pink and white blooms light the apple tree A bumblebee hums; a caterpillar crawls A tit darts by; Lena lays down cards and strings Each card stands for a whole species, not one creature The bumblebee carries pollen bloom to bloom From some blooms, tiny apples grow; string joins cards Each species has its threads They join the web of life If a whole species disappears One thread or several may come loose The caterpillar nibbles one green leaf The tit brings caterpillars to its chicks Earthworms shred damp leaves under the tree Fungi and bacteria break the scraps down Crossing strings make a web, not one straight chain Each species has its threads They join the web of life If a whole species disappears One thread or several may come loose Lena covers a card: what if its species vanished? The whole species, not one creature, would be gone Effects can differ, and some may take time Each species has its threads They join the web of life If a whole species disappears One thread or several may come loose She leaves flowers and one damp, leafy corner Unnoticed species have connections too
