Archimedes’ principle

A liquid or gas pushes an immersed object upward with a force equal to the weight of the displaced fluid. This also applies to objects that sink.

Sources

Density

Density tells us how much mass occupies a given volume: density = mass ÷ volume. A large object need not have a high density.

Sources

Floating and sinking

For an object floating freely, buoyancy balances its weight. Under ordinary conditions, an object denser on average than the liquid sinks; trapped air counts in that average.
