Where are you racing, drop from a dark cloud? Down the bare hillside, rain sweeps you along With soil specks and a leaf for a boat A shining wetland waits down below Shallow water soaks the soft ground here All year, or only part of the year A wetland holds some of the rain And slows the rushing flow Water reaches the stream more gently This helps the life nearby Between the reeds, the raindrop slows down It spreads through hollows, shallow and wide Like a sponge, this ground holds some water The rest moves on, but not quite so fast A wetland holds some of the rain And slows the rushing flow Water reaches the stream more gently This helps the life nearby Some swirling mud settles to the bottom Roots catch some specks the water carried Food waits for frog and dragonfly A wading bird shelters near the shore A wetland holds some of the rain And slows the rushing flow Water reaches the stream more gently This helps the life nearby The leafy boat keeps sailing on Now I see: this wetland helps life nearby
